A 42-year-old former South African Revenue Service (Sars) has been arrested for allegedly defrauding his former employer of almost half a million rand.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) on Thursday said it was alleged that between 2011 and 2014, the suspect, who was employed at Sars Bellville, unlawfully submitted fraudulent tax returns on behalf of private individuals.

The Hawks said the accused would then charge a fee on the amount reimbursed to taxpayers. The receiver of revenue apparently suffered losses of about R433 456.74 as a result of the suspect’s unlawful activities.

The Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks arrested the accused on Wednesday. He is expected to appear in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on May 30 to face charges relating to fraud.
