The suspect was found on site with four unpolished diamonds worth R14 000 in his possession.

A 62-year-old man was sentenced to one year imprisonment or a R50 000 fine for illegal mining and unlawful possession of unpolished diamonds, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in North West said on Wednesday.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said Bernhard van Niekerk was sentenced at the Schweizer-Reneke District court on Tuesday.

“The Hawks members followed up on information that pinpointed the Eerste Begin farm in Amalia as a spot for illegal mining. On 1 December 2016, a search was conducted at the farm and the suspect was found on site with four unpolished diamonds worth R14 000 in his possession,” she said.

He was immediately arrested.
